DESCRIPTION OF THE “FAMILY” DISPOSITION:
A WAY TO REPRESENT THE MEANING OF THE TRADITIONAL FAMILY IN MASS DISCOURSE (EXAMPLE OF PROVERBS AND SAYINGS ABOUT MARRIAGE AND FAMILY)
It is presented the results of the “family” disposition’s analysis, made on the basis of the proverbs about marriage and family as “cultural sediments” which contain the life experience of discourse agents. The purpose of the study is to identify the dominant categories (components of the structure) of the “family” disposition in the classical-traditional family. The psychological meaning of the interpreted textual data (proverbs and sayings about marriage and family) is revealed by using the hermeneutic method. The descriptions in this context are considered as the technique of interpretation within the limits of hermeneutic psychological method, and the dominant categories are considered as the interpretative potential for understanding the peculiarities of the “family” disposition in mass discourse. The reconstruction of marriage and family meaning is carried out in the discourse of the traditional family as a constructed text, which reproduces the idea of relations between spouses. The attention is focused on the implementation of sociocultural roles, functions, and values following, which comply with the requirements of the marital interaction as an institutional norm. The implicit meaning of the asymmetry in the functional-role behavior of the spouses indicates the main difference of the discourse: the merging of the “sex”, “gender”, “identity” categories, and explains the meaning of the basic man / woman roles in the family hierarchy. The main characteristic of the functional-role system within the discourse is defined by the interrelation of the indicated categories and by the “family - marriage – paternity” ordination, which are corresponded to their understanding as a social norm of interaction between spouses and family members. Based on the analysis of the 118 proverbs corpus, the dominant categories of the family are distinguished: motive, functions, roles, relations and values, which are considered as components of the traditional family structure. It is noticed that they have the interpretative potential for understanding the system of views on the relationships of spouses’ organization within the discourse of the traditional family. The procedure of data “saturation” revealed the typical interpretative rules of family and marriage, which are reproduced in the motives of “family” disposition directivity as the absolute values of spouses, childhood and paternity, hierarchy of “husband – wife – children” interaction. It was concluded that the “family” disposition as a configurations’ matrix of practices cultivated by society had been provided the replication of behavior patterns with existing imperatives: social values (material, moral-ethical), man / woman status, heteronormativity of relations, functional-role dichotomy. The discovered components of the family structure serve as the basis for a theoretical understanding of the transformation processes in the practices of marriage-family partnership and paternity, and form the ground for studies on the subjective components of these practices.
